In the Book is dedicated to Gabby, an elementary school friend who passed away this year.

Without knowing it at first, I became friends with two of her cousins during high school. Because of this, I was able to stay updated with her throughout that time but for some reason didn’t keep too much direct contact with her other than for a couple of years via myspace.

When I reached out to her cousins to ask if there was anyway I could support them they said they would appreciate it if I attended one of the vigils at their house for Gabby. While I was there, I was shown a photo album and noticed that there were pictures of me in it. There aren’t a lot of pictures of me from elementary school; mostly because I tended to avoid them and didn’t have a solid group of friends/hung out alone or I was in the principal’s office because I got hurt by someone again. But there I was in multiple pictures. She had these pictures of me from that time and that I forgot even existed. She even wrote “Jessi” on them. This was back when everyone only referred to me as my legal name even though I’d ask for them not to all the time.

Gabby and I hung out every day after school from k-8 because our moms both worked late. As we got older and she became more and more of one of the cool kids, I expected the dynamic to change but it didn’t. It just carried over into her defending me on several occasions during the normal school hours.

She was always nothing but kind to me. I’ve heard the same and more from others. Gabby made an impact on everyone she met. I’m very thankful and lucky to have known her.
